Corporate Social Responsibility
Captain Boy brought the miniature of APOL Panamax vessels for a purpose. He was selected to participate in Inspiration Class, an educational program initiated by Indonesia Mengajar Foundation. The program invited professionals from various backgrounds to voluntarily have a one-day teaching in 15 elementary schools in Tangerang. At the occasion, they discuss about their profession and share their experiences. Kelas Inspirasi is held simultaneously in Bekasi and Bogor, West Java.
This movement is expected to broaden students’ aspirations and drive their motivations towards bigger dreams. Furthermore, professionals can have an active role to inspire by teaching elementary school children of lower middle class.
Some professionals involved in this class are physiotherapist, public relations, naval architect and television producer. Among these professions, Captain Boy’s was the most intiguing one for the students. The former ship captain appeared in a white uniform and a hat, which evoked curiosity. During his teaching, Captain Boy explained the various parts of panamax ship. The students listened attentively and posed questions enthusiastically about crew activities and the ship itself.
Curiosity about seafarers and ships did not come only from the students. After the class, teachers gathered around the captain to ask questions. (*)
CORPORATE Social Responsibility (CSR) has always been part of concern of PT Arpeni Pratama Ocean Line Tbk (APOL). Aside from education, we have been payed attention to environmental issues as well. Since 2009, APOL has revitalized barren land in Kampung Pasir Angin, Cipayung, Mega Mendung, Bogor, West Java, and empower the local community.
The area of 1.3 hectares was originally a barren land which was dormant for more than 20 years, due to lack of water supply. Land which was initially overgrown by grass and weeds is then gradually converted into rich-nutrient land which is suitable for organic farming. The main purpose of this organic plantation is to obtain products that are safe for consumption. Currently, this farm can produce up to 70 kilograms of organic products every week.
Our first measure in revitalizing the land was building irrigation facilities, such as water source, two groundwater wells, three water tanks which consist of two units with a capacity of 2,000 liter and one tank with a capacity of 5,000 liters. In order to distribute the water to the whole area, we also built a water pipeline with 28 holes and removable sprinkle taps.
APOL’s success in cultivating barren land into an organic garden heard by several researchers who came to this organic farming to have comparative studies. A number of guests from agricultural research institutes and public officials from Indonesia and abroad have come for a visit. Some of them are:
1 . Karang Widya NGOs, youth organizations who focused in organic agriculture
2. UPTD Protection Center Food Crops and Horticulture (BPTPH) of Department of Agriculture Lampung
3. Dublin City Agriculture Office
4. UPTD BPTPH North Sulawesi
5. Australian Quarantine Inspection Services (AQIS): Canberra and Darwin, Australia
6. Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia
7. Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF) Australia: Canberra and Perth, Australia
